The Diploma in Academic Management will provide you with a clear understanding of more strategic aspects of educational management.

The Diploma in Academic Management is for experienced academic managers (5+ years in post). You will currently be operating at a senior level in your institution, or will be planning to equip yourself to move to a more senior position.

Who is the course for?

You are an existing academic manager in a language teaching organisation. You may already be working in a senior capacity, or wish to prepare yourself for a senior role with strategic responsibilities.

Course objectives

By the end of the course you will:

  • have a clear understanding of the more strategic aspects of academic management
  • be equipped to function at a senior management level
  • have undertaken focused and supported research on a specific aspect of your organisation’s operations

The Diploma is credit-bearing towards the Distance Learning MSc in TESOL offered by Aston University.

Course content

The course is taught in five modules, plus a one week orientation module, with each module lasting eight weeks. After each module participants will have a further two weeks to research and write the module assignments.

Orientation module

The first week of the course is dedicated to the Orientation Module. Participation is compulsory. This module is delivered entirely online.

The Orientation Module runs for 1 week, during which you will:

  • learn how to use the VLE (Moodle) we will be using for the training programme
  • explore the topic of educational management as it relates to your organisation
  • explore aspects of organisational culture in theory and how far these theories are articulated in your organisation
  • begin working together as an on-line Study Group

Module 1: Managing Change

This module will give you the theoretical framework and practical tools you need to lead change programmes and respond to change initiatives effectively.

During the module you will:

  • consider how change is managed in your organisation
  • develop an awareness of different types of change
  • develop an understanding of the different factors that drive change
  • become aware of the different response cycles to change

 Module 2: Effective Communication

This online training module looks at practical ways you can achieve successful and effective communication in your workplace.

During this module you will:

  • consider issues of management style and organisational culture
  • explore communication in all its aspects as a managerial activity
  • acquire a set of basic principles to underpin all aspects of your communication
  • explore which tools you can use to help you develop and enhance the effectiveness of communication in your workplace

Module 3: Managing Customer Service

Module 3 looks at different aspects of quality using the Quality Pyramid as a starting point for our explorations.

During the module you will:

  • explore ways of measuring customer satisfaction, and how to use your customers as a resource to help you improve and utilise different types of benchmarking and benchmarking tools.
  • look at how to set customer service standards
  • learn how to set up and manage patterns of employee involvement in quality management

Module 4: Business Management

This online training module looks at marketing and finance as key components of business management. The online training material we cover will encourage you to become familiar with basic financial documents, and also to consider your organisation's approach to marketing and promotion.

During the module you will:

  • consider your organisation’s marketing objectives and the key components of the marketing mix
  • look at product life cycles and portfolios
  • discuss ways of analysing the competition , using different approaches for this process
  • consider aspects of financial and budget planning
  • look at how to read and understand a Profit and Loss Account
  • review how to cost a course and make a business case

Module 5: Extended Assignment

This module prepares you for writing your final Extended Assignment of 3,500 words. You will look at how to define the focus of an assignment and how to write an assignment proposal. We will examine aspects of research methodology and define which are appropriate for the research questions you select for your Extended Assignment.

During the module you will:

  • work through the process of defining an assignment focus in consultation with your tutor
  • explore and assess qualitative and quantitative research methods
  • research and analyse an issue of particular relevance to your context, which should be of practical use to your organisation in the future

Assessment and workload

Each module is assessed with a written assignment plus a minimum 80% active participation. Four modules have assignments of 2,500 words and the final module has an extended assignment of 3,500 words.

Course participants can expect to spend around 6 to 8 hours per week studying, both on and offline.

Lessons are released on a weekly basis by the tutor and course participants are expected to work in lockstep with their tutor group on each week’s lesson.
