The 12-week course is divided into two closely related parts. Firstly, workshops and seminars and secondly, supervised teaching practice. This provides all participants with the opportunity to put into practice ideas discussed and demonstrated in the seminar sessions.

Participants will observe experienced teachers working with General English classes at International House London.

The course is aimed at

  • New teachers
  • Teachers with with little or no formal teacher training
  • The course focuses on teachers' ability to:

  • Develop learners' speaking, listening, reading and writing skills
  • Analyse language: grammar, lexis and phonology
  • Introduce, revise and practise language at a range of levels
  • Evaluate published and authentic materials
  • Motivate learners
  • Plan lessons
  • Manage classes
  • Adapt and respond to different learning and teaching environments
  • Options may include

  • Teaching Young Learners
  • Teaching Business English and one-to-one classes
  • At the end of the course participants will have

  • Developed an awareness of learners' backgrounds, learning styles and needs
  • Developed and extended their own teaching skills
  • Practised using a framework to analyse language effectively
  • Established criteria for selecting and adapting published and authentic materials
  • Practised evaluation of their own teaching and its effectiveness from the learner's point of view
  • Entry requirements

    Applicants must be at least 18. It is generally recommended that candidates should be aged 20 or over, but candidates aged between 18 and 20 can be accepted at our discretion.

    Applicants must have an awareness of language and a competence in English equivalent to Cambridge Proficiency Certificate (CPE level).
