Can I write in pencil?


Yes - For Papers 1 (Reading), 3 (Use Of English) and 4 (Listening).

No - for Paper 2 (Writing). You will need to write in PEN.

Where can I find my Candidate number or Centre Number?


In the Confirmation of Entry Registration sent to you by the Exams manager. (This will be sent in a letter around 2 weeks before the exams).

Who is ‘the Centre’?


The centre is the place of registration for the exam. International House London is your centre if you have registered to take the exam with us.

What if my name is wrong or misspelled?


You must tell the Exams Centre as soon as you receive your Confirmation of Entry. You must also tell the exam invigilator on the day of the exam.

Can I eat in the exam room?


No

Can I drink in the exam room?


Only still WATER from a plastic bottle with a secure lid. (No other drinks are allowed even if they are in closed bottles.)

Can I have my mobile phone with me if it’s turned off?


No. Your mobile phone must NOT be on your person even if it’s turned off – you can be disqualified for this. You can leave your mobile along with any other electronic devices (such as MP3 players, recorders, bleepers, etc.), your personal belongings (bags, coats) either at the back or front of the room (the invigilator will let you know where on the exam day).

Will I have extra time to transfer my answers onto the answer-sheet?


No. You must transfer all your answers within the time provided for each paper. (The Start and Finish times will be written on the board). The invigilators will remind you when there are 10 minutes left and 5 minutes left.

When the invigilator tells you to stop or put your pencils/pens down you must stop writing immediately. You are not allowed to write anything else after this. If you forgot to write your name or candidate /centre number on the exam papers then you must raise your hand to call the attention of the invigilator. If you do not stop writing when you are told to do so you will be disqualified. Please read the Notice to Candidates and Summary of regulations for candidates for more information on this.

In Paper 2 (Writing) shall I leave a space between lines (one line blank) on the question paper?


No. You must not leave any blank lines in the answer-sheet.

What do I do if I have a question during the exam?


You can raise your arm to attract the attention of the invigilator who will come to you and try to help. Remember you must not ask for the invigilator’s help on answering any questions on your paper or to explain any questions.

Can I ask the invigilator to correct my spelling?


No. The invigilator is not allowed to help with your spelling.

Can I go to the toilet during the exam?


If you need the toilet during the exam, please raise your hand and an invigilator will escort you to the toilet. (Please note that this applies only for the Written exams, if you need the toilet during the Listening you will miss part of the exam as the invigilator cannot stop the CD).

Can I use any extra paper for the writing?


No. You have plenty of space to write your answers in the question paper itself. If you run out of space you can use the blank pages at the back of the question paper. If you are not sure what to do – please raise your hand. The invigilator will come to you.

I have practiced/did the mock Speaking exam with my classmate but the invigilator told me I had to go in with someone else I don’t even know. Why?


According to Cambridge guidelines candidates cannot choose their speaking partners.

What happens if I miss only one part of the exam (one paper)? Can I still pass?


If you miss any part of the exam you will not normally be given a grade. Therefore, you will not Fail nor Pass as no grade is awarded.

Can I change the dates of the exams?


No. All the exam dates are set by Cambridge.

I have received a label. What do I do with it and what is it for?


This is explained in your letter: The label is for us to post your certificate (3 months after the exam). You must write your name + address on the label. If you want to collect it from the school please write your name + write International House London + telephone number or email address.

Can I take home my notes from the exam?


No. you are not allowed to take any information/papers relating to the exam out of the exam room. Any rough paper, notes, etc. have to be collected by the invigilator and destroyed afterwards.

How will I know my results?


You can access you results online by registering at www.cambridgeesol-results.org. You need to keep your Confirmation of Entry after the exam, as it contains your login details for the website and the date when the results become available. If you lose the Confirmation of Entry, please contact the Centre Exams Manager who will be able to re-send this information to you.

When will I get my results?


Approximately six weeks after you have taken the exam, you will be able to check your result online at www.cambridgeesol-results.org. The Statement of result will show how well you performed in each Paper on the following scale: Exceptional, Good, Borderline, Weak.

About one month after that, the certificates will be sent to the Exam Centre where you took the exam. These can then be posted to you or collected from the school.
