IELTS test that sets the standard

IELTS Away Days

What is an IELTS Away Day?

International House

This is where an accredited IELTS Test Centre agrees to run a test on a client’s premises exclusively for that client’s students. The first time the test is run on a client’s premises there is a pre-inspection visit. This is to establish that:

  • There is a suitable area for the administrator(s) to sit and register the candidates / check IDs etc on the morning of the test.
  • The testing room for the Listening, Reading and Writing parts of the test is suitable e.g. adequate sound system; sufficient space for the number of candidates; appropriate furniture etc.
  • There are sufficient, suitable interview rooms for the speaking tests to take place and there are cassette players in each room which will produce recordings of the interviews to an acceptable standard.
  • There is a suitable area for candidates to sit whilst they are waiting for the speaking test.

Is a minimum number of students necessary in order to book an Away Day? What is the maximum number of candidates?

International House

IH London would conduct an away day for a minimum of 40 candidates. There is no upper limit provided the facilities are adequate and sufficient time is given to book examiners.

Is it possible to book an IELTS Away Day on any day?

International House

This used to be the case but since September, 2003 IELTS Test Centres around the world are restricted to set dates. These dates can be found here.

Basically, there are 3 Saturday tests and one Thursday test each month and the Away Day would have to be conducted on one of these days.

Is the test fee any higher for an Away Day?

International House

No. The fee is the same as if your students came to the IH Testing Centre - £100.00 per candidate. The test fees are set centrally by the British Council / Cambridge – ESOL.

Would there be any additional costs?

International House

Yes. The client would be expected to pay travel costs for the administrator, invigilators and examiners. Clients would also be expected to either provide tea / coffee or at least have a place where the examiners / administrators etc could buy a hot and / or cold drink.

When would payment be expected?

International House

Test fees would need to be paid in advance of the test. Travel costs would normally be re-imbursed on the day by cash or cheque.

When would the results be ready?

International House

The results would be sent out within 10 working days of the test date.

Who do I contact if I have any other questions?

International House
