Cambridge ESOL TKT KAL (Knowledge About Language)

IH London is developing a specialised TKT KAL (Knowledge about Language) course. This course is ideal if you teach English as foreign language to primary, secondary or adult age groups.

The online training programme will prepare you for an English Language teaching award from Cambridge ESOL, which can be taken at IH London at the end of the course.

TKT KAL (Knowledge About Language)

Currently in development, this 8-week course is made up of 12 online training sessions. You will focus on developing your knowledge of the language systems that teachers need to plan and deliver effective lessons. You will also look at the teacher’s awareness of the language needs of learners, and the difficulties involved in learning a second language. The exam areas of lexis, phonology, grammar and discourse will be covered during the course.

This online teacher training course includes mock exams on each aspect of the TKT KAL exam. It also provides online training resources and references to help you progress to other Cambridge ESOL awards after the course.

Course start dates

Who should take this course?

  • New and experienced English language teachers working with primary, secondary or adult learners.
  • Subject teachers who need to teach their subjects in English, or who want to add second language English teaching to their portfolio of skills.
  • English language teachers who are required to teach curricular subjects in a second, third or further additional languages.
  • Classroom assistants working in CLIL contexts.

Course requirements

  • You are expected to study and participate in online training tasks for up to five hours per week.
  • An English language level equivalent to PET or Level B2 of the Council of Europe’s language framework.
