New teacher training award won by ELTA Albania

ELTA Albania Master Trainers

Albanian teachers’ association wins the first IH London and IATEFL teacher training award.

Inaugurated at this year’s IATEFL Conference in Harrogate, the IH London and IATEFL Award offers up to 20 days of teacher training, delivered anywhere in the world by IH London.

This new award was developed by International House London specifically for Teachers’ Associates who are also IATEFL members.

Applicants for the award are asked to submit a rationale for the training outlining why the programme is needed, how it can be sustained and developed in the future.

ELTA Albania’s winning submission proposed a programme for developing the skills of a group of Master Trainers through a centralised programme delivered with the help and support of IH London trainers.

The programme is now being rolled out to teachers regionally, and forms the backbone of the training provision offered to Albanian teachers over the coming academic year. IH London and the ELTA Albania Committee designed and shaped the programme together.

The project took place in summer 2014, and involved two IH trainers (Danny Norrington-Davies, IH London, and Lou McLaughlin, ex-IH Sabadell) working with a group of up to 15 Master Trainers in Tirana.

The trainers provided 4 days of training in both language and training skills. The week culminated with a mini-conference in Tirana, where the Master Trainers delivered short workshops which they had prepared with the IH London trainers’ support to local ELTA Albania teachers.

These sessions were compiled into a training pack for the Master Trainers to use with their own teachers in the regions.

Shpresa Delija, outgoing President of ELTA Albania, said; “The training course was impressive, encouraging and very demanding. We highly appreciate the data, the material and your expertise in language teaching. It was useful and we again thank you for the hands on activities during the training, which made us reflect on our present work and made us make plans to change in our future work. Working with you has been a different learning experience which will be remembered for ever.”

IH London and ELTA Albania are continuing to work together on an impact assessment of the sustainability of the training plan.
