E-moderating courses (175 KB) in 2012.
E-moderating is taught entirely online over 4 weeks with approximately 10 hours study each week. The course is accessed through IH London’s learning management system and combines private study, collaborative discussion tasks and live classrooms.
By the end of the course trainees will have a basic awareness of the key aspects of supporting online learners and developing an online community and have developed basic e-moderating skills enabling them to function as an online tutor.
Read feedback from our previous e-moderating course participants
The course is arranged into 4 weekly blocks as follows:
Block 1: Introduction and orientation
In this block we will get to know one another and then focus on the nature of online learning and fostering an online community.
Block 2: Supporting online learners
In this block we will look at how learners develop online, compare common online learner profiles and learn how to identify and support learners in difficulty.
Block 3: Managing discussion forums
In this block you will learn how to set up a discussion forum, design a discussion forum task, learn how to respond to learner posts and how to summarize and close a discussion. We will look at some real examples from the CELTA Online.
Block 4: Managing live classrooms
In this block you will learn how to use a Live classroom, such as that used on the CELTA Online, firstly as a student and then as a moderator. You will learn how to troubleshoot common problems. Finally you will run your own session and reflect on the experience.
Tasks on E-moderating are moderated by experienced course tutors. Trainees will also be assessed by tutors on their ability to teach online courses as follows:
To pass the course, trainees will need to demonstrate:
1. They have met the participation requirements
2. They have completed and passed the three assessed tasks
Check that you can meet the hardware and software requirements for this course.
