Summer is a great time to visit London. July and August are the warmest months and summer in London is a unique opportunity to explore all the parks, outdoor markets and attractions!

However, spending your summer in London and studying can be intimidating sometimes, as there are so many things to do around the city and it can get busy.

Don’t worry! We have some tips to help balance your studies with your social life during your summer in London and make sure you don’t miss out on all the fun!

Don’t plan a very heavy schedule

If you arrive in London with a very hectic schedule planned already, you will find it difficult to keep up with it. What’s more, you won’t be able to join any other activities outside of your timetable. This can cause you to miss out on cool hangouts with new friends, free music festivals in London parks and many other summertime fun activities happening in London. So, make sure you leave some free space in your calendar before you get here!

Plan a schedule!

Having said that, you should definitely have a rough plan of how you want to spend your time here. Make sure you note down all the attractions you want to visit and research opening times and availability. Summer in London gets very busy, so if you want to visit Madame Tussauds or go on the London Eye, it’s a good idea to book tickets in advance to avoid disappointment or long queues once you are in London.

It’s also important to be realistic with your schedule. If you are only here for a week, don’t try to do absolutely everything. You will end up shattered and you won’t get the best out of your visit to London. Instead, make compromises and choose the things you want to see which are essential to you!

Join the IH Social Programme

We have a very rich and engaging social programme at the school. Our social programme coordinator, James, is very happy to help you choose which places you want to visit. What’s more, we usually have tickets for attractions on reserve, so if you are unlucky online, you can try our social programme desk for musicals, visits to football stadiums, club nights and many more activities!

In addition, our social programme offers school activities such as Conversation Club. This is a fantastic way for you to make new friends within the school and find people who want to visit all the same places as you!

Say ‘Yes!’ even when you are not sure about it

Studying with IH London is fun! There’s no doubt about that. However, there might be days when you feel less energetic and would prefer to go home. While it’s important to be mindful of your well-being, don’t say ‘no’ to activities with your new friends just because you haven’t tried them before.

Remember: you are spending a summer in London in order to experience new things and explore. Sometimes, unplanned and random walks around London with your classmates lead to the most memorable experiences!

Study in a group

Studying in a group will help you get through your homework a lot quicker than studying alone. You can either join our Study Hour or form your own study group within the school. Plus, studying in a group makes for some really fun times, too!

Leave the Underground behind

Summer in London offers you the best opportunity for exploration: mild weather! It’s your chance to take more walks instead of getting squished in the Underground. IH London is located in the heart of Covent Garden, which is next to the West End. From Seven Dials to Leicester Square there are beautiful pedestrianised streets and hundreds of cute shops to gaze. So, grab a camera and get walking!

Distances are not as long as they seem to be when you are on the Underground. Plus, if you get tired, you can always hop on a double decker bus and get the full London experience!
