The CELTA (Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) is a structured and practical introduction to teaching English as a foreign language (TEFL). It aims to provide you with the knowledge, practical experience and confidence to begin working as a TEFL teacher upon successfully completing the course.

Who is this course for?

Anyone who would like to start teaching English as a second language or people who have some initial experience but would like training and a qualification. You will need to have an advanced level of English to begin the course.

If your English language level is below the requirement, you can still study the practical aspects of the CELTA on our IH certificate in TESOL course.

Blended CELTA

Combine face-to-face learning with online studying at times that suit you over 13 weeks.

Course content 

The course has five topics:

  • An introduction to teaching
  • Language skills and analysis
  • Teaching the four skills
  • Planning classes and preparing resources
  • Teaching and professionalism

To receive a CELTA certificate you will need to complete the course and meet the assessment criteria for all written and practical assignments. You will be assessed on 6 hours of teaching practice and 4 written assignments. There are three passing grades: Pass A, Pass B and Pass.

The course includes:

  • Teaching practice at IH London
  • Observation of qualified teachers
  • Detailed feedback with tutors
  • Seminars
  • Four written assignments
  • 120 hours of lessons (plus self study)
