This is an intensive course with morning and afternoon study sessions that will cover both theoretical and practical areas of teaching Business English.

This course is aimed at teachers who want to teach Business English to clients and gain a recognised qualification. We offer this course to prepare you for taking the English UK Cert IBET assessment. 

The course covers many areas such as: concepts and language in a business context; approaches, methods and techniques; teaching skills for meetings and negotiations; using the telephone for business purposes and presentations.

You will focus on the following:

  • Definition of Business English
  • Characteristics and expectations of business learners
  • Concepts and language in a business context
  • Needs analysis and research
  • Course and syllabus design
  • Materials and resources, including web-based resources
  • Approaches, methods and techniques: lexical learning, role-play and case studies, learner training
  • Internationalism and culture
  • Teaching oral business communication skills: socialising, meetings, negotiations, telephoning and presentations
  • Teaching business reading and writing skills: correspondence, memos and reports
  • Evaluation and assessment: evaluating programme aims, managing feedback and business English exams
  • Professional development and employment

During the course you will gather ideas and information for a post-course assignment. Within 12 weeks of the end of the course you will submit a written project based on a practical teaching scenario (3000 – 4000 words). The assignment is marked by International House London and moderated by English UK and LanguageCert.

This new international qualification is jointly validated and managed by English UK and LanguageCert.

Danny Norrington-Davies, CELTA and Delta Trainer

Danny started teaching English over 16 years ago in Botswana and gained his CELTA in the UK in 1995. He worked with Japanese volunteers in Malawi before returning to London to complete his Delta. He has taught in Argentina, South Africa and Thailand. Danny has been with IH London since 2007. He is a CELTA and Delta trainer and works on programmes at King’s College London. He is the author of a teaching methodology book, From Rules to Reasons, which was short listed for an ELTON award. He works on our partner courses at King’s College London.
