Learn to teach other subjects in English

Who is this course for?

This course is for teachers who are teaching another subject, such as geography, history or sciences, but using English to teach the subject. It is perfect for teachers who are looking for strategies and skills to better support students in this context.

Course objectives

  • To develop an understanding of the key challenges and benefits of CLIL
  • To consider methodology, teaching strategies and skills for use with CLIL
  • To adapt materials for language learning in a CLIL subject
  • To share ideas from the participants’ classrooms and school context

Course outline

The course provides teachers with an understanding of the language learning processes, as well as which teaching strategies could be used to support learners and increase student engagement. The course takes a practical approach with discussions and demonstrations of materials.

You will work with your tutor to produce a wide range of materials and activities that can be used as part of a CLIL curriculum.

Some subjects that may be covered are:

  • exploring ways to allow learners more contact with the target language
  • teaching the functional and core language necessary for the subject matter
  • evaluating, selecting and adapting published and authentic materials for a CLIL curriculum
  • developing awareness and understanding of syllabus and course design
  • using a task-based learning approach to develop students’ speaking skills
  • developing students’ speaking, listening, reading and writing skills
  • introducing and practising new language (grammar/vocabulary/function)
  • developing students’ pronunciation
  • exploring techniques for correcting oral and written learner errors
  • developing awareness of and responding to different learning styles
  • using technology to enhance learning
  • using project work in the classroom
  • exploring different approaches to testing and assessment

Participants are asked to bring some teaching materials for their subject to use on the course. As CLIL is implemented differently around the world, it is a great opportunity to compare and contrast different experiences.

Our teacher was excellent, deploying a wide range of methodology and teaching techniques. She was really dedicated and empathetic, and taught me a lot of useful techniques for the classroom.
