Learn how to teach 1-1 classes 

The course trainers are both experienced 1-1 instructors and teacher trainers, with years of experience teaching at International House London.  IHL has over 65 years’ experience with 1-1 teaching, which includes clients from all walks of life: corporate, exam, and professional.

This course takes place online.

 

Who is this course for?

The course is ideal for experienced teachers of English, both native and non-native speakers (C1+), who wish to teach 1-1 classes to business people (CEOs, managers, consultants, etc), professionals (e.g. doctors, lawyers, etc), exam students (e.g. IELTS, OET, TOEFL, etc), or General English students.

 

What will you achieve?

By the end of this course you will have:

  • analysed differences in approach between 1-1 and group classes
  • evaluated the role of the teacher-student relationship in teaching
  • evaluated the role of critical thinking and task-based learning in teaching
  • looked at the methodology of feedback-based language input and feedback-based language practice
  • looked at the planning and implementation of lessons in terms of context, overview, course-length, student learning style, flexibility, etc
  • watched some real 1-1 lessons, focussing on both teachers and students
  • assessed some materials and technology for 1-1 classes
  • assessed some methods of demonstrating progress

 

Course outline

During the course you will:

  • study different profiles of 1-1 students
  • study different lesson plans for 1-1 lessons
  • design course-plans and lesson-plans for 1-1 students
  • assess different methodologies
  • assess different materials
  • assess different technology
  • watch some real 1-1 lessons (for homework)
  • share with fellow course participants experiences of teaching 1-1 students
