International House London has a unique partnership with King’s College London to provide a joint MA TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) with a practical certificate in ELT.

The programme is aimed specifically at novice teachers with fewer than three years’ teaching experience and prepares graduates for a professional career in English language teaching.

Who is this course for?

Students who are just starting out in a career teaching English as a foreign language, with a 2:1 degree (or international equivalent) in a relevant subject (such as English or a foreign language, linguistics/language, communication, psychology or a social science subject). Alternative qualifications may be considered. Students do not need to have teaching experience.

Course objectives

  • To introduce teachers to current theory and research in applied linguistics relevant to language teaching
  • To provide research-informed principles and practical skills to enable teachers to develop courses and lessons appropriate for different teaching situations
  • To provide a strong foundation for teachers’ ongoing professional development as their career progresses
  • To give teachers the tools to research teaching, learning and the professional contexts they work in

Course outline

The programme will provide novice and early career teachers with a thorough introduction to current research, theory, principles and practices in English language teaching.

Modules include methodology analysing language for teaching and learning, and researching second language learning. Students also choose from a range of professional option modules, examples include Materials Development, Teaching English for Academic Purposes, Language Assessment, the Digital Classroom, and Interculturality and Culture in ELT. Students will also receive excellent tutorial support and programme-specific training in research methods and academic writing.

The programme includes four weeks of supervised teaching practice at International House London where students will have the opportunity to observe language classes taught by our experienced, inspirational teachers. Participants will plan and teach real lessons and carry out research on language learning and teaching. Participants are entered for the Cambridge CELTA or IH Certificate in TESOL award.
