OET Sunday Series – Exam preparation course for Doctors and Nurses

This 4 week face-to-face OET Preparation course takes place on Sundays, at our beautiful school in Covent Garden, Central London.  The course is held in the Executive Centre on the fifth floor, complete with an exclusive social lounge with stunning panoramic views across the London skyline.

Course content

The OET Sunday Series course focuses on the skills, language and techniques medical professionals need for the OET exam.  It runs over 4 consecutive Sundays.  The morning sessions, 9.30 – 12.30, focus on writing skills, and the afternoon sessions, 13.30 – 17.00, focus on the speaking, reading and listening skills that are required to be successful in the OET exam.  Our teachers are OET specialists and have received specific training to teach OET exam preparation techniques.  This course will not only help you to achieve the grade you need in the OET exam, but will also help you to communicate effectively with patients and their families.

Although all parts of the exams are covered, the course gives specific focus to Writing and Speaking, as these are the areas candidates tend to find the most difficult.

Course methodology (writing)

The course consists of 14 units, which follow a similar layout:

  • A set of case notes that will be examined and analysed, followed by a writing task.
  • A series of different case scenarios aimed at improving writing skills such as strategic planning and organisation.
  • Exercises and activities on relevant language points.
  • A language focus that explores the specific and technical aspects of writing.

The lessons in writing are integrated and applied in speaking.

Some speaking fluency activities that we do include:

  • Presenting as though you were in a ward round or in a multidisciplinary meeting.
  • Briefing a colleague during a handover at the end of a shift.
  • Telephoning or face-to-face discussion about a patient’s case
  • Making an urgent referral or asking for advice
  • Discussion with a patient regarding, diagnosis, treatment options, giving choices, exploring possibilities, etc.

The teachers are qualified OET providers.

Our teachers have undergone the rigorous process of OET preparation provider status. We have teachers with relevant healthcare and medical backgrounds who can assist you not only with the English language, but also with the practical language used in the British healthcare system.

About the Occupational English Test (OET)

The Occupational English Test (OET) is a test of English for healthcare professionals. The OET is used in the UK, Australia, New Zealand and Singapore among others to assess the Medical English skills of a wide range of healthcare professionals, including doctors, nurses and midwives.

Healthcare professionals require a grade B in the OET to work in the UK. Grade B is an advanced level of English, equivalent to IELTS band 7 and C1 in the Common European Framework (CEF).

IH London is an accredited provider of OET courses, and we are one of the first premium providers of OET courses in London.

I have learnt a lot about how to approach the OET exam and the course provided me with the right confidence and knowledge to sit the exam. Both Julie and Sally are great teachers. I am glad I came to the OET course run by them.
