This teacher development course focuses on emerging theories and methodologies in English language teaching (ELT), placing them alongside established teaching practices. 

You'll cover a range of methodologies, examine them to see what works for you and look at ways of incorporating new approaches into your teaching.

Who is the course for?

Choose this course if you're a practising teacher of English and would like to explore the underlying principles of current English language teaching (ELT) methodologies and approaches.

You'll have an English level of C1 advanced (CEFR) or above to do this course.  If you're not sure of your English level, please take our English level test

Course objectives

By the end of this course you will have:

  • developed an awareness and understanding of current ELT principles and practice
  • developed your ability to critically examine current ELT principles and practice
  • learned to evaluate current trends in context with your own teaching 
  • explored teaching issues relevant to your own teaching context
  • acquired a range of practical teaching ideas and materials

Course content

The course will look at ways to help you gain a deeper understanding of the methodology of English language teaching (ELT) and learn practical techniques through:

  • task-based learning
  • the Lexical Approach
  • syllabus design
  • teaching large and mixed ability groups 
  • testing and correction
  • technology and language teaching 
  • learner autonomy
  • Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL)
  • motivation theories and motivating learners in the classroom
  • exploiting authentic and non-authentic listening and reading texts
  • integrating speaking, listening, reading and writing skills
  • integrating phonology into lessons
  • emerging methodologies - e.g. the Flipped Classroom 

Your tutor will assess the needs of the group at the beginning of the course and will map the course content to those needs. Areas other than those above may be covered according to the group's needs.
