About British Sign Language
British Sign Language is a visual means of communicating using gestures, facial expressions and body language. It is a language with its own vocabulary, grammar and syntax. It is not dependent upon or related to English and is used mainly by people who are Deaf or to support those who have hearing difficulties. British Sign Language is a real, full and living language that is part of a rich cultural heritage and one of the UK’s indigenous languages.
Course Overview
In the Introduction to BSL course, brought to you by IH London and Signature (the leading awarding body of BSL courses in the UK), you will learn many skills and develop a completely new way of communicating. Using a practical approach, you will gain an insight into the grammar of BSL, a knowledge of signs relating to everyday life and the ability to finger spell.
Our live Online BSL classes take place via Zoom with a qualified, experienced teacher and fellow students. The lessons are highly interactive, and via teacher screen-sharing students are able to experience a real classroom environment without leaving the comfort of their homes.
Course Content
At the end of this course, the successful learner can:
- Address, greet and take leave of another BSL user
- Understand and produce fingerspelling (the manual alphabet) for names of people and places
- Use and recognize strategies for asking for clarification
- Use and recognize simple question forms
- Ask for and give relevant personal information about self or others
- Recognize and use local numbers for people, time, money and dates
- Describe a range of weather conditions
- Ask about the weather using a range of vocabulary
- Give and receive information about different ways of travelling
- Give simple directions in places or buildings
- Ask for directions using a range of vocabulary

To get the most from this course you will need:
- A reliable internet connection
- A desktop computer, laptop, tablet or smartphone
- A web camera on or attached to the device you are using
- An integrated microphone in the device you are using or an attached headset
- The day before your course, you will be sent via email all the details you need to connect to the IH London Zoom classroom
