Great news for our Russian language students – there are plenty of ways to enjoy Russian culture this summer in London! Check out a few ideas…

 

Russian Theatre

Starting this week at the Vaudeville Theatre is Anton Chekhov‘s play, Three Sisters. Running until the 29th June, the play will be performed in Russian with English surtitles. Tickets start at £12.50. This is a fantastic opportunity to catch of performance of one of the late 19th century’s greatest writers in its original language.

Russian Art

The Tate Modern is currently exhibiting an exciting collection of works by Russian Artist Natalia Goncharova. Open until the 6th of September, this is the fist time that most of these pieces have been seen in the UK. This is a unique chance to see some of the bold, innovative works of Goncharova – one of the most influential artists of the early 20th century. Tickets are available for £16 or are free for members.

Travels Across Russia

Pushkin House – home of Russian culture in London – will be hosting writer Sara Wheeler on the 27th of June to discuss her latest book, Mud and Stars: Travels with  Pushkin and Other Geniuses of the Golden Age. Wheeler spent months travelling the breadth of the country discovering the real Russia, its people and society. Following in the footsteps of 19th century Russian writers, she travelled through 8 time zones, experienced numerous different cultures, and crossed vastly diverse terrains. Listen to her stories at what is sure to be a fascinating talk.

Russian Choral Music

Vocal group Tenebrae will be performing a programme of Russian choral music at the church of St Bartholomew-the-Great on the 15th July. The concert, entitled Russian Treasures, includes beautiful pieces written by likes of Rachmaninov, Tchaikovsky and more. The mixture of music and architecture (in London’s oldest parish church) promises an inspiring evening!
