Useful Phrases for Visiting a Clothes Shop

May 20, 2022July 6, 2022

by IH London

English level: A2-B2

There’s no doubt that for anyone who loves shopping, London is the perfect city! Lots of IH London students enjoy visiting the shops when they’re not in class, and with so many different ones to chose from, it’s no wonder London is known as one of the shopping capitals of the world. With quirky markets in Covent Garden, big brands on Oxford Street and famous department stores like Harrods and Harvey Nichols, you’ll need a few handy phrases to help you while you shop…

Things that shop assistants might say

Hello, can I help you?

Possible response: I’m fine, thanks. I’m just looking. OR Yes, please. I’m looking for. . . black jeans.

What size are you looking for?

Possible response: Small/medium/large/extra-large, please.

If you would like to try it on, the changing room is on the first floor

Possible response: OK, thank you.

How would you like to pay?

Possible response: In cash, please. OR By card, please.

Would you like a bag?

Possible response: No, thanks. I’ve got one. OR Yes, please.

Things that you might say

Excuse me, do you have any. . .?

Possible response: Yes, if you would like to follow me I’ll show you.

Excuse me, have you got this in a small/medium/large/extra-large, please?

Possible response: I will check to see if we have any in stock.

Excuse me, where is the changing room, please?

Possible response: It is over there, in the corner.

Useful information

Most shops will ask you to pay a small amount for a bag. Normally, this will be about 10 pence, so it’s a good idea to take your own bag to save money!
