Useful Phrases for Visiting a Restaurant

April 22, 2022May 11, 2022

by Eva Uddin

There are lots of phrases you will use every time you go to a restaurant. Here are some important ones to remember!

When you arrive:

You: Hello. Have you got a table for two/three etc.?

Waiter/waitress: Have you booked?

You: Yes, we booked a table for two at 2pm. The name is. . . (for example).

OR: No, we haven’t. Can you fit us in?  to fit someone in = to find space for someone (regular verb).

During the meal:

Waiter/waitress: Are you ready to order the drinks yet?

You: Yes, please. Could we have . . ., please?

Example: Could we have a bottle of red wine, a bottle of mineral water and a lemonade, please?

Waiter/waitress: Are you ready to order the food?

You: Yes. For the starter, could we have . . ., please?

Example: Could I (we) have the soup for the starter, please?

You: And for the main (course), could we have. . ., please?

Example: And for the main (course), could we have the fish and the lasagne, please?

Waiter/waitress: Have you finished? Can I clear the table? To clear sth. (regular verb) = to remove things from a place where they are not wanted. Can also be used for people.

At the end:

You: Can we have the bill please?

Waiter/Waitress: Of course, here you go!

Other useful words:

Tip = The extra money you give to say thank you for good service.

Side = A dish you are having to accompany another dish. For example, Fish and Chips with a side of bread and butter. The bread and butter will come on a separate plate, at the same time as your fish and chips.

Cutlery = Knives, forks and spoons for eating your meal with. You may want to ask for clean cutlery if yours is dirty.

Complementary/’On the house’ = This means that it is free! Sometimes you may receive a complementary shot of alcohol or small chocolate at the end of your meal for no extra cost.

Make a reservation = The same as book a table. Ask the restaurant to save a table for you.

Bathroom/Restroom/Loo/Toilet/WC = All of these words mean the same thing!
