London’s best secret parks and gardens

April 25, 2022May 11, 2022

by Fenella Dale

Spring is definitely in the air; the flowers are in bloom, the birds are singing, and the clocks have gone forward, so we are officially on British Summer Time. It is therefore the perfect time of year to get out and have a walk. London is not short of parks, and you have probably visited some of the bigger ones like Hyde Park or St James’ Park. Now it’s time to discover the secret parks and gardens around the city which are often more beautiful and are less busy. Take a look at our favourites here.

Phoenix Gardens, Soho

https://www.thephoenixgarden.org/

Here is a secret garden, only 10 minutes’ walk from International House, in the middle of busy Soho. Phoenix Gardens are open 7 days a week from morning to evening and offer a little piece of calm and relaxation. With plenty of flowers, a green lawn and wildlife, it is well worth a visit in your lunchbreak.

Hampstead Pergola, Hampstead Heath

Hidden away close to Hampstead Heath this hill garden and pergola will take you back in time. Once the back garden of a wealthy Lord, this unique garden features aging terraces, columns and arches covered in flowers and plants, which are beautiful in any season.

Parkland Walk, Finsbury Park to Alexandra Palace

Parkland Walk is the longest linear nature reserve in London and follows the route of an old railway line. Popular with dog walkers, runners and couples wanting a gentle stroll, you can enjoy views of the city as well as shade from the tall trees as you go. Beginning at Finsbury Park, you can walk as little or as much of it as you like.

Red Cross Garden, Southwark

This beautiful open space is located close to Borough Market and is open all year round. It is a mix of modern and old as it includes many of its original Victorian features which date back to 19th century. So, you can discover a little piece of history while enjoying the plants and flowers.

Kyoto Garden, Holland Park

If you live in West London and have young children, you probably know the playground in Holland Park – it is epic. But, there is another special feature hidden within the park – its Kyoto Garden. This traditional Japanese garden has peaceful waterfalls, ponds with carp fish and Japanese maple trees to create a very calm atmosphere.

Brockwell Park Walled Garden

This traditional English country garden is hidden away within Brockwell Park, in Herne Hill. A good garden to visit during spring or summer, so that you can visit the vegetable plots, wildflowers and  herb garden. It is a community kept garden so you can ask the gardeners working there to tell you more.

Bushy Park, Richmond

You might know Richmond Park, but there is another park close to Hampton Court Palace to see. Bushy Park is another royal park with huge green fields, ponds and waterways, and even deer! It is popular with families, dog walkers and cricket players, so you could watch a game while you wander around.
