The Tastiest Food to Eat in Spring

April 13, 2022April 21, 2022

by Fenella Dale

So, you have tried fish and chips, pork pies and had an afternoon tea, but have you tried some typical seasonal spring food? Whether you prefer cooking at home or eating out at a pub or café, there is plenty of good food to gobble (eat quickly). We have selected a few recommendations for you below:

Roast lamb

Lamb (baby sheep) is a typical meat eaten at this time of year. Many Brits will enjoy it on Easter Sunday with roast vegetables and the traditional mint sauce. British people will usually roast their lamb in the oven, but you may like to try something different like lamb meatballs, or lamb chops. Here is a recipe for roast lamb with a Greek twist and if you would rather go out, some great places to share a Sunday roast.

Easter eggs

Chocolate, chocolate, chocolate! That is what most people think of when they hear the word ‘Easter’. The shops and supermarkets are full of Easter eggs at this time of year but they were not always made of chocolate…  Originally, Christians would paint hens’ eggs as they symbolised new life and beginnings. Thankfully, most people prefer a chocolate egg these days and if you are looking for where to buy the very best Easter eggs – here are some top recommendations.

Hot cross buns

Great for breakfast, your mid-morning snack or with afternoon tea, hot cross buns are delicious toasted with lots of butter and maybe some jam. You will find them in your local supermarket and often in different flavours ranging from the traditional dried fruit to chocolate or apple and cinnamon. Whichever type you buy, they all go very well with a cup of tea!

Easter cakes

Like hot cross buns, Easter cakes are also popular at teatime in spring. The traditional cake is called simnel cake which is made with dried fruit and has a marzipan topping. Of course, chocolate cake is also popular and so are rice crispy cakes made with mini chocolate eggs. If you want a cooking challenge, you could make a speckled egg cake featuring light blue icing with ‘specks’ (small spots) of chocolate.

Spring veg – carrots, peas, spring onions

Easter is not all about sweet treats – spring is a time of year when tasty fruit and vegetables begin to appear in farmers fields. If you would like to eat something in season from the UK, some ideal veggies are carrots, peas and spring onions. They go very nicely with your roast lamb, in a risotto or maybe even on their own! Why not visit your local farmer’s market to fill your fridge with healthy greens!
