Travel Inspiration – French-Speaking Destinations

July 6, 2022August 23, 2022

by Ted Curtis

Our dream holidays have been put on hold over the last couple of years, but now that everything has opened up, the world is *quite literally* your oyster! For French language students, there are so many dreamy destinations where you can put your language skills to the test and experience some memorable adventures. If you’re after some inspiration, we’ve got tons of great resources, blogs and videos all in French to give you some brilliant holiday ideas!

France

We couldn’t *not* start with France! The most visited country in the world, it’s very easy to understand why as it oozes culture, history, beauty and splendour. Whether you want a week hiking in the Alps, a weekend getaway to Paris, a sunny beach holiday in the French Riviera, or whatever you have in mind for the perfect holiday, rest assured that France has you covered. Make sure to check out the France Voyage website to plan the perfect summer holiday, where you will find endless articles on the best festivals and activities to do this summer, which local delicacies you should feast on, where to stay and thousands of itinerary ideas. Read all the articles, blogs and advice in French to boost you language skills and get itchy feet to hop on the Eurostar. If that isn’t enough, watch the videos below for 101 hidden gems well worth a visit!

Switzerland

France isn’t the only European country that speaks French and it’s easy to forget that it’s one of the official languages of Switzerland too. Spoken predominantly in the Western region of Romandie, there are endless places to see and explore. First on your list should be Geneva, a city of luxury, splendour, greenery and plenty of history, culture and ambience. Find out more about the city in this video:

Hop on a short train journey to the beautiful town of Neuchâtel for the perfect day trip. This historic lake-side town is home to splendid architecture and buildings, quaint restaurants and bars… and just immaculate vibes all round.  Neuchâtel is very Instagrammable and well-worth a visit in our eyes. Watch the video below to find out what there is to do and see in this pretty little town:

For those who love nature, going for hikes in fresh-aired mountains, admiring pristine landscapes, lakes and forestry, then Switzerland is home to it all. Read this blog about the 23 most beautiful places to visit in Switzerland, from les gorges de l’Aar to the Matterhorn peak.

Belgium

Much like Switzerland, Belgium is also a very multilingual country with multiple native languages. French is spoken mostly in the Southern region of Belgium, known as Wallonia, which is home to cities like Charleroi and Liège. While Brussels is a bilingual city, French is nowadays more commonly spoken than Flemish. With bags of culture, art, history and ambience, Brussels is another perfect city break for anytime of year. Home to some of the best beer and chocolate in the world, not to mention the famous gaufres belges (Belgian waffles), Brussels is a foodie’s paradise. Watch the short video below by Échappées Belles about what to do for a weekend in Brussels:

Guadeloupe & Martinique

Fancy a more tropical summer holiday to practise your French? Head to the beautiful islands of Guadeloupe and Martinique in the Caribbean! These beautiful paradises have idyllic, white-sand beaches, crystal clear water where you can do scuba diving, sailing and other water sports. Make the most of the incredible nature by going on treks through jungles and up volcanoes. Enjoy the local cuisine, delicacies and culture by fully-immersing yourself with the locals. Can’t decide between the two islands? Read this blog and watch the videos below for all the travel inspiration you could possibly need.
