Elementary German Face-to-Face Courses

Gentle German Level 2 | Afternoons

  • Course Overview
  • Who is this Course for
  • Course Content
  • FAQs

Gentle German Level 2 takes you out into town. You’ll learn to name places and buildings, talk about how you get around, and ask for and give directions.

Then it’s on to food: what you like to eat and drink, writing a shopping list, and handling conversations in shops, cafés and at mealtimes. Along the way you’ll meet the accusative case, one of the key building blocks of German, and the very useful verbs mögen and möchten.

With longer afternoon sessions, there’s plenty of time for role plays, so asking the way or ordering in a café soon feels natural.

Course format

Schedule  Weekday afternoons, 14:15–16:00
Duration  8 weeks (8 sessions of 1 hour 45 minutes, 14 hours in total)
Delivery  Face-to-face
Location  IH London, Covent Garden
Level  Beginner, A1
Coursebook  Netzwerk neu A1.1, Kurs- und Übungsbuch mit Audios und Videos (ISBN 9783126071628), Units 3 and 4

Why choose Gentle German?

  • The same content as our regular Level 2, with two extra hours of class time
  • Longer afternoon sessions, so there’s time to practise, ask questions and review
  • A relaxed, supportive group where you can build confidence speaking
  • Qualified, experienced teachers at a trusted school in the heart of Covent Garden
  • A clear path onwards to Level 3

This course is for learners who have completed our German Level 1 (in any format), or who have equivalent knowledge, such as introducing yourself, using haben and sein, and asking simple questions.

It’s a good fit for

  • Learners who have finished Level 1 and want to continue at a calmer pace
  • People who found their first course quick and would like more time to consolidate
  • Anyone with free weekday afternoons who prefers a relaxed, supportive class

This course may be especially useful if you want to

  • Find your way around a German-speaking town
  • Shop and order food and drink with confidence
  • Get comfortable with the accusative before the pace picks up
  • Set yourself up well for Level 3

How does this compare to our other German courses?

Gentle German and our regular courses cover exactly the same content and lead to the same outcomes. Gentle courses simply give you more time: eight sessions of 1 hour 45 minutes (14 hours) rather than 12 hours. If you’d prefer to move faster, our Saturday Fast Track courses cover more than one level in eight weeks.

The content below is a rough guide. Your teacher will choose the most useful material and adapt the pace to suit the group, so there’s always time to consolidate before moving on.

By the end of this course, you’ll be able to

  • Name places and buildings in a town, and ask and answer questions about them
  • Talk about means of transport
  • Ask for and give directions
  • Identify everyday objects
  • Talk about months, seasons and hobbies
  • Talk about food and your food preferences
  • Write a shopping list and handle conversations in shops and at mealtimes

Language you’ll learn along the way

Grammar  Indefinite articles ein, ein and eine; negative articles kein, kein and keine; imperatives with Sie; word order; the accusative and verbs that take it; mögen and möchten
Vocabulary and themes  Places and buildings; means of transport; directions; months and seasons; meals, food and drinks; types of shops
Culture and context  Restaurants and cafés, family life, and shopping and paying in German-speaking countries

What your German will sound like

Entschuldigung, wo ist der Bahnhof?

Excuse me, where is the station?

Gehen Sie geradeaus und dann links.

Go straight on and then turn left.

Ich möchte ein Brot und zwei Brötchen, bitte.

I’d like a loaf of bread and two rolls, please.

Ich mag keinen Fisch.

I don’t like fish.

Self-study

We recommend around an hour of self-study a week. The coursebook’s online audio and video are a great way to practise listening between lessons, and your teacher will suggest exercises to consolidate what you’ve learnt.

What’s next?

After this course you can continue to German Level 3, in the Gentle format or any of our other German courses.

Can I join if I did Level 1 in a different format?

Yes. All our German Level 1 courses cover the same content, so you can move into Gentle Level 2 from an evening, weekend or online course. If you’ve learnt German elsewhere, our free online placement test will give you a good indication of your level.

Do I need to buy a coursebook?

The course uses Netzwerk neu A1.1 (ISBN 9783126071628), which comes with audio and video. It covers our first German levels, so you’ll keep using it as you progress.

How is Gentle German different from your regular Level 2?

The content and outcomes are the same. Gentle courses run for 14 hours over eight 1 hour 45 minute afternoon sessions, rather than 12 hours, so there’s more time for practice and review.

Will we cover every page of the coursebook?

No. Your teacher will focus on the most useful content and may add other materials, adapting the pace to suit the group.

Why does the teacher speak German in class?

Hearing German throughout the lesson is one of the most effective ways to build your listening and comprehension. Your teacher will always make sure you understand, using gesture, visuals and carefully chosen language.

Will I be speaking in class?

Yes. Speaking is at the heart of every session, in a supportive and encouraging group where making mistakes is part of learning.

What happens after this course?

After this course you can continue to German Level 3, in the Gentle format or any of our other German courses.
