International House London has 2 Spring and Summer Centres in the UK, and few people know them as well as Shane Connor. Shane is the Young Learners Operations Coordinator of International House London. We asked him to tell us more about the Spring and Summer Centres and what our students get up to.
We asked Shane to tell us more about the Spring and Summer Centres and what our students get up to.
Tell us what a "typical" day (if there is one!) at International House Spring and Summer Centres is like?
"Wow, a typical day varies on what the programme is offering for that day!
House Supervisors wake everyone up at 7.15am in time for breakfast which is from 7.45am at most schools. Students then go to assembly for information about the rest of their day before classes begin for the morning. Lessons finish at 12.20pm after which students head to lunch. After lunch English Active students are coached in their chosen options whilst Discover English students enjoy sports and activities. English Plus students have extra lessons.
Dinner is a chance for a catch up over good food in a relaxed and chatty environment. Students usually go to their boarding houses for a change of clothes either for a Disco or one of our other fantastic evening events like Casino Night. Students have to be in their boarding houses by 10pm for their House Supervisor meeting. Lights out at 11pm ready for another jammed packed day!"
Can you tell us a little about International Houses Spring and Summer Centres and their location?
"International Houses Spring and Summer Centres are based in Oxford and Ellesmere.
Our Oxford and Ellesmere centres offer something for everyone, whether students prefer a city or countryside location. Both centres have a wide range of on site facilities which include sports pitches, tennis courts, swimming pool, golf course I could go on!"
All of International Houses Spring and Summer Centres offer a wide range of activities and excursions - which ones are not to be missed?
"We put great emphasis on physical activity, with a full programme of sports taught by professional coaches including tennis, football and golf. We arrange supervised tours outside of the centres, exploring some of the UK's best visitor attractions for young people.
The evening entertainment programme students can relax and socialise while enjoying organised group events which include discos, quizzes, challenges and competitions!
Our students are always busy and there is always something to do!"
What makes International House Spring and Summer Centres distinctive from other seasonal centres?
"We really want everyone to have the best possible experience with us. This includes our staff and the schools hosting us as well as our students and their group leaders.
Our new programme Future Leaders is aimed at 14-17 year old students who are interested in exploring different career and academic options. This course is aimed for teachers and their school groups but we can also accept individuals on this course during the summer. Students will work on a project that includes guest speakers, industry related visits culminating in a presentation and prize giving ceremony."
