Everyone has their own style of learning a language. Some prefer textbooks and tackling complex grammar exercises, whereas others prefer techniques such as language learning apps or chatting away with native speakers. What can be agreed universally is that watching series and movies in the language you’re studying is a great way to pick up new vocabulary, and get accustomed to different accents and dialects too. They are a more relaxing and enjoyable way of getting to grips with a language, and perfect for when you’re feeling shattered after a long day of work or if you simply aren’t in the mood for anything too strenuous. Russian language learners should be delighted to hear that there are endless Russian series on Netflix. Here are our top 5:
Better Than Us
You will find no better Russian series on Netflix than Better Than Us. This chilling sci-fi is set in the year 2029 where robots are slowly replacing humans and it follows the devastating consequences that this has on society. Each episode is exceedingly tense and slightly disturbing, but equally it is terrifying that this fictional world feels not too far away. Let’s hope that we are not just a few years away from this scenario!
Sparta
The mysterious and tragic death of a teacher in St. Petersburg grabs the attention of a local detective who, after interrogating her students, gets caught up in the addictive VR game Sparta. Shocked by what he finds, the perilous game blurs the line between reality and a virtual world, which inevitably leads to trouble. If you’re a fan of ‘Black Mirror‘, the series Sparta will be right up your street.
The Method
The pulsating crime thriller, The Method, is about a special detective, along with his novice assistant, hunting down the most dangerous and insane crooks lurking in the criminal underworld. Words can’t do this series justice and you’ll be left hooked by the trailer alone!
Fartsa
When Kostya Germanov loses badly in a game of cards, he suddenly falls in debt to some dangerous mafia criminals, so his three quirky friends decide to help get him out of this mess. Not your typical crime drama series, the gripping Fartsa gives you a glimmer of the glamorous life in 1960s Russia as well as plot twists left, right and centre.
To The Lake
When a terrible plague strikes Russia, chaos ensues and humanity struggles to survive as they face the end of civilisation. With power shortages, an economic crash on the cards and gangs roaming through the streets for food and gasoline, home is no longer safe for Sergei and his family. Along with a small group of close acquaintances, including his son and ex-wife as well as his father and neighbours, they escape to Karelia but have to overcome serious danger on the way. Based on the page-turner novel, ‘Vongozero’ (2011), To The Lake is an edge-of-your-seat thriller that will have you hooked from the first episode.
