5 Must-Try Francophone Foods

June 17, 2022July 19, 2022

by Ted Curtis

France is famous worldwide for its extravagant cuisine, but did you know that other countries from the French-speaking world have created amazing dishes and delicacies that have gained popularity across the globe? Read our latest blog where we share some of our favourite dishes and delicacies from around the French-speaking world:

Fondue

A fantasy for all cheese lovers, a typical fondue is a Swiss melted cheese dish served in a massive communal caquelon where everyone can dip in bread or whatever they fancy. There’s a common misconception that fondue originates from France, and variations include a chocolate fondue or even a fondue bourguignonne where you can dip raw beef in sizzling oil to cook it as you please. Watch the video below for the ‘real’ fondue fribourgeoise recipe:

Here’s the fondue bourguignonne recipe:

For those with a sweet tooth, here’s a chocolate fondue recipe:

Escargots

A common specialty in France, escargots are snails cooked in garlic butter or wine to make a truly scrumptious hors d’oeuvre. While the texture takes some getting used to, the flavour will take you by surprise. Watch the video below to learn how to make escargots à l’ail:

Tarte Flambée

Tarte flambée (or Flammekeuche as it is said in Alsatian) is a famous delicacy from the French-German border region. Comparable to pizza, thin dough is cooked in a scorching wood-fire oven to make a crispy base topped with onions, lardons and crème fraîche. Yum! Watch the video below for an authentic recipe:

Tartiflette

If you’re in the Alps on a ski trip, it would be a mistake not to order a tartiflette at some point. Originating from the Savoy region, this gratin of potatoes, onions and lardons is beloved across the country and is the ultimate comfort food. Learn how to make it with this easy-to-follow recipe below:

Poutine Québécoise

Emerging from Quebec during the 50s, poutine has taken the world by storm. Initially, poutine was met with resistance, but nowadays people can’t get enough of this delicious dish of gravy on top of cheesy French fries. What’s not to love? Follow this recipe for the ultimate comfort food:
