Do you want to feel more confident and fluent when speaking English? Our evening Focus on Conversation classes are ideal for people living and working in London who want to improve their communication skills and focus on speaking. 

– Extend your vocabulary and improve your fluency across a range of topics 

– Develop skills and strategies to help you improve your speaking 

– Learn to speak English naturally in real-life conversations in group discussions, role-plays and activities 

– Receive feedback on your speaking and advice on how to improve from your experienced teacher

1. Effectively Interrupt and Manage Conversations

a. Use 12 polite interrupting expressions naturally in conversation.

b. Apply appropriate interruption techniques during discussions, including when to agree, disagree, or redirect the conversation.

c. Watch and analyze real-life videos (e.g., a political debate) to understand different styles of interruption.

 

2. Give and Follow Instructions in English

a. Understand and categorize language used to describe stages in a process (e.g., steps in cooking or tasks).

b. Use imperative sentences to give clear instructions, including warnings and advice (e.g., “Be careful when…”).

c. Describe procedures and daily activities in English, such as making coffee or organizing belongings.

 

3. Discuss and Recommend TV Shows and Films Using Functional Language

a. Discuss TV shows and films, using vocabulary related to movies and TV genres.

b. Use functional language to express vagueness and uncertainty when recommending shows or films (e.g., “It’s sort of a…” or “I think it’s kind of like…”).

c. Share personal opinions on TV viewing habits and binge-watching, while participating in group discussions about cultural differences in TV habits (e.g., between the UK and US).

 

4. Understand and Describe Humor in English

a. Analyze and discuss humor in English through video clips (e.g., Mr. Bean’s comedic situations).

b. Describe actions and events in the past tense, focusing on humor and personality traits.

c. Engage in speaking activities and group discussions to reflect on the lessons learned from humorous content, applying new vocabulary and verb phrases.

 

5. Pronunciation and Intonation Practice

a. Improve sentence intonation, stress patterns, and pronunciation of key phrases, particularly when interrupting or giving instructions.

b. Participate in drills to practice clarity and fluency in spoken English, with a focus on natural-sounding conversation.

– Speak to an Academic Manager about your language level and studies at Student Hour every Monday, Tuesday and Friday from 12:30-13:30 in Room 501 (5th Floor)

– Join free or heavily discounted Social Programme activities every day to explore London and make friends with other students

– Monthly tutorials with your teacher to discuss your progress and receive personalised feedback

Will there be any progress assessment if I join for long period?

You will be able to discuss your progress with your teacherThere is no formal assessment in these classes as the programme is designed to cater to the class and students’ individual pronunciation needs.

 

Can I attend a trial lesson?

For Focus on Conversation you can request a trial in advance.

 

I want to sound more British; will this course help me to improve my accent?

The main aim of the course is to help you feel confident in speaking English with clear, intelligible pronunciation.

 

Will there be repetition if I join for a long period?

Our syllabus is set up specially to avoid repetition of materials, even if students need to repeat a level. 

 

Will I study with the same teacher and classmates for the whole duration of my course?

Students can join and leave IH London on a weekly basis so your classmates may change. Teachers are generally assigned to a group for a minimum of four weeks.
