Ready to take your Spanish to the next level?

Fast Track Spanish: Pre-Intermediate 1 picks up where your Beginner Spanish (A1) left off and takes you through two IH London levels in eight focused Saturday morning sessions. At pre-intermediate level, the language becomes genuinely expressive — you move from survival Spanish into the kind of fluency that lets you tell stories, describe how things used to be, and hold your own in real conversations about life, health, and the past.

The headline grammar milestones of this course are the pretérito indefinido, the introduction of the pretérito imperfecto, and the contrast between indefinido and perfecto. Alongside these, you will develop comparatives and superlatives, expand your use of pronouns, and build a richer vocabulary across health, sport, and personal history.

Course format

Delivery  Face-to-face
Location  IH London, Covent Garden
Level  Pre-intermediate / A2 (part 1 of 3)
IH Levels covered  7 and 8
Coursebook  Aula Internacional Plus A2

Why choose this course?

  • Study with a trusted and internationally recognised language school in the heart of London
  • Learn in an immersive, face-to-face environment with a qualified, experienced teacher
  • Cover Spanish Levels 7 and 8 in just eight Saturday mornings
  • Benefit from practical activities, role-plays, and cultural moments every week
  • Use Spanish from day one — real communication, not just textbook exercises
  • Make rapid progress without any weekday commitment

This course is for learners who have completed Fast Track Spanish: Beginner 3 or our Spanish Level 6 and are ready to build on those foundations at a fast, structured pace. You will be comfortable with basic present tense Spanish and will have encountered the pretérito perfecto; now it is time to go further.

It is a good fit for:

  • Adults who have completed Fast Track Spanish: Beginner 3 or our Spanish Level 6 course and want to continue at the same pace
  • Adults who have studied approximately 70–80 hours of Spanish and are ready for A2
  • Students who have obtained grades 1–5 on their Spanish GCSE
  • People who want to cover two levels of Spanish in a single focused Saturday programme
  • Learners who want to develop real narrative fluency — telling stories and describing experiences in Spanish
  • Anyone who wants to move beyond basic Spanish and into the language of real everyday life

This course may be especially useful if you want to:

  • Master the pretérito indefinido and begin using the imperfecto with confidence
  • Talk about your childhood, memories, and experiences with real depth
  • Discuss health, sport, and physical wellbeing in Spanish
  • Develop the ability to compare people, places, and things naturally

How does this compare to our Spanish courses?

Both formats cover exactly the same content and lead to the same learning outcomes. This course covers two levels — the equivalent of two separate courses — in eight Saturday morning sessions of three hours each. The evening courses cover one level at a time at a more gradual pace.

This course may not be the right choice if you prefer a slower, more gradual pace. In that case, our regular Spanish courses may be a better fit.

The content below gives you an overview of the grammar, vocabulary, and cultural themes covered in this course. It is a rough guide only — your teacher will select the most relevant material from the coursebook and may adapt the pace and order of topics to suit the group. Please note that this course does not cover every page of the coursebook.

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Narrate past events using both the pretérito indefinido and the pretérito perfecto
  • Describe how things were in the past using the imperfecto
  • Talk about your childhood, memories, and experiences growing up
  • Compare people, places, and things using comparatives and superlatives
  • Discuss health, physical wellbeing, and lifestyle habits

Course content overview

Grammar focus  Pretérito indefinido: regular and key irregular forms; introduction to pretérito imperfecto; contrast between indefinido and perfecto; comparatives and superlatives; indirect object pronouns
Vocabulary and themes  Childhood and memories; health and the body; sport and exercise; describing people and physical appearance
Culture and context  Growing up in the Spanish-speaking world; attitudes to sport and physical activity; health culture and traditional remedies

Self-study

We recommend 1–2 hours of self-study per week. Your teacher will suggest exercises from the coursebook or workbook and may also recommend online resources and apps to support your progress between Saturday sessions.

Learning approach

Lessons are face-to-face, dynamic, and led by a qualified, experienced teacher who speaks in Spanish throughout. Every session combines structured coursebook work with practical communicative activities — conversations, role-plays, cultural exploration, and speaking tasks that help you use Spanish in realistic, enjoyable situations from day one.

Grammar, vocabulary, and pronunciation are developed systematically alongside communicative practice, so you make progress across all aspects of the language, not just conversation.

Do I need to have studied Spanish before?

Yes. This course is designed for learners who have completed A1 Beginner Spanish — either through Fast Track Spanish: Beginner 3 or our Spanish Level 6 course — or who have studied approximately 70–80 hours of Spanish. If you are unsure whether your level is right, please take our placement test or contact us; we will be happy to advise.

Do I need to buy a coursebook?

Yes. The course uses Aula Internacional Plus A2, which you will need from your second lesson onwards. The book is available to purchase on our website. There is nothing to organise before you start. You will use this coursebook for the whole A2 pre-intermediate level.

How is this different from the Spanish Level 7 and 8 courses?

This course covers the same content as Spanish Levels 7 and 8 combined and leads to the same outcomes — in eight Saturday morning sessions rather than two separate courses. If you want to progress quickly and prefer a Saturday format, Fast Track is the right choice. If you prefer a more gradual pace, our other courses may suit you better.

Will the course cover every page of the coursebook?

No. The course covers selected content from Aula Internacional Plus A2 rather than every page. Your teacher will prioritise the most important communicative and grammatical content, and the programme may be adapted to suit the pace and needs of the group.

What is the difference between the pretérito indefinidopretérito perfecto, and imperfecto?

These are three of the most important past tenses in Spanish. The pretérito perfecto is used for recent or personally relevant events. The pretérito indefinido is used for completed past events at a specific point in time. The imperfecto is used for descriptions, ongoing past states, and habitual actions.

Examples:

Pretérito perfecto — Esta semana he visitado el museo.

Pretérito indefinido — El año pasado fui a Madrid.

Pretérito imperfecto — Cuando era niño, jugaba al fútbol todos los días.

Learning to use all three — and to choose between them naturally — is one of the most important milestones in Spanish, and it is a central focus of this course.

What kind of activities will we do in class?

Each session combines coursebook work with practical communicative activities — role-plays, speaking tasks, cultural moments, and pair or group work — so you are using Spanish every week, not just learning about it.

Will I be speaking in class?

Yes. Speaking and real communication are at the heart of every session, in a supportive and encouraging environment where making mistakes is part of the learning process.

What happens after this course?

After completing this course, you can continue to Fast Track Spanish: Pre-Intermediate 2, which covers Levels 9 and 10 at the same pace. Alternatively, you can continue with our regular Spanish Level 9 course.
