What to do in London in January

August 15, 2023

by Margo Alieva

Winter walks and warm, welcoming pubs, London is truly magical throughout the winter season. There’s plenty to do both inside and out as Londoners come together to stay cosy in the colder months. Although we’re still enjoying the summer, with the approaching new academic year we’re taking some time to plan ahead and think about future opportunities!

Candlelight concert

Winter calls for something warm and cosy. What about a Candlelight Concert? Immerse yourself in the world of Vivaldi, Bach or Chopin surrounded by candles. If classical music isn’t your cup of tea, make sure to check out their Adele, Coldplay and even Fleetwood Mac tributes! Film lovers will also enjoy the Hans Zimmer soundtracks performed by incredibly talented musicians. Don’t miss out on attending concerts in London’s famous landmarks and venues, like Southwark Cathedral, Sea Life or Eltham Palace.

London Art Fair

If you are an art lover – London is the place to be! Kick-start your year by exploring art galleries from all over the globe, art performances, immersive installations and public talks. The London Art Fair will take place from 17-21 January in the Business Design Centre in Islington. Don’t forget to sign up and get your tickets!

Veganuary

Veganuary is an annual challenge run by non-profit organisations in the UK that encourages people to follow a vegan lifestyle for a month. Even if you are not vegan or vegetarian, it is a good excuse to check out some vegan restaurants in London, since most of them will have special menus available! Check out this amazing list of vegan bakeries here.

Canary Wharf Winter Lights Festival

Visit the largest lights festival in London among the commercial towers of Canary Wharf. Expect to see over 20 interactive installations created by local and international artists that will definitely bring some colour to grey winter skies! Oh, by the way, the festival is free and there is no need to buy tickets! Keep an eye out for the dates on the official website.

Winter Wonderland

No trip to London in winter is complete without visiting the famous Winter Wonderland in Hyde Park! You can challenge yourself and try skating on a huge ice rink, take a ride on the Eurocoaster, visit Santaland, watch Christmas circus performances and drink lots of mulled wine! Make sure to check the official Winter Wonderland website for the upcoming announcements!

Try something new

January is a time of year for resolutions and starting something new!

If you want to dive into the world of British cuisine – why not sign up for a cooking master class? The famous doughnut makers at Bread Ahead organise English baking workshops throughout the year! Learn how to make beloved scones, pasties or a British bap! If you are just a beginner – no worries, the class is suitable for all levels of experience.

If crafting is something you enjoy the most during the magical time of the year, check out the social pottery classes in Kentish Town. It is a great way to relax, make new friends and take a piece of your own art home!
