Create, Evaluate and Adapt Materials Based on the Needs of
your Students
Who is this course for?
Many teachers lack confidence in developing materials, whilst others do not have time because of busy teaching and admin schedules. Some teachers also feel that designing teaching materials is something that should be left to experts.
Materials Development is for teachers who want to develop their skills for the future, making them confident enough as a materials designer to share what they do with the wider ELT community.
What will you achieve?
Take this course to:
-Understand principles underpinning materials design
-Explore findings from SLA research
-Learn about the role of the local syllabus or curriculum
-Create, evaluate and adapt materials based on the needs of
your students
What will Materials Development cover?
Gain Practical Experience
This is a very practical course. A lot of class time will be in the form of workshops where you will work with your fellow teachers to create, evaluate and adapt materials based on the needs of your students, and you will be asked to complete a number of practical activities during the course.
Ultimately, we hope that you can use the materials you design in your future lessons and that you will be able to pass on what you have learnt to colleagues where you work.
Personalise Your Training
We hope that you will use the time between sessions to do further work on materials development tasks that you have started in the workshop sessions. We also recommend that during the course you spend some time looking carefully at published materials as a source of ideas.
We will bring materials to the sessions for evaluation, but this course will be more practical if you can bring materials from your own teaching context that we can explore. These can be published materials you use or ones you have designed yourself. Wherever possible you will be encouraged to relate ideas discussed in class to the context(s) you teach in.
Use Theory To Inform Your Teaching Materials
Materials Development will look at factors that may influence materials design in different educational contexts. It will explore different theories of language learning and language teaching, and how current approaches to language teaching influence materials.
In general, the course aims to develop a principled approach to the evaluation of materials, both published and
self-made, so that your materials are informed by SLA theories, principles and your beliefs as a teacher.
Here is a Sample Timetable. Please note, this only gives an indication of what you will learn on the course.
