- FAQs
Gentle Italian Level 2 takes you somewhere every Italian learner wants to be: at the table. You’ll learn to order at a bar or restaurant, say what you like and don’t like to eat and drink, and book a table over the phone.
You’ll also start describing where you live, from the rooms in your home to what it’s like. Along the way you’ll add -ere and -ire verbs and some of the most useful irregular verbs in Italian, such as volere, potere, andare and venire.
With longer afternoon sessions, there’s plenty of time for role plays, so ordering a coffee or booking dinner in Italian soon feels natural.
Course format
| Duration | 8 weeks (8 sessions of 1 hour 45 minutes, 14 hours in total) |
| Delivery | Face-to-face |
| Location | IH London, Covent Garden |
| Level | Beginner, A1 |
| Coursebook | Dieci A1, C. M. Naddeo & E. Orlandino, ALMA Edizioni (ISBN 9788861826212), Unit 3 and Unit 4 (sections A and B) |
You’ll need the coursebook for this course. You can buy it via our website, and we’ll share the link in your welcome email.

It’s a good fit for
- Learners who have finished Level 1 and want to continue at a calmer pace

- Anyone with free weekday afternoons who prefers a relaxed, supportive class

- Talk about your tastes and preferences
- Describe your home in simple Italian

How does this compare to our other Italian courses?
Gentle Italian and our regular courses cover exactly the same content and lead to the same outcomes. Gentle courses simply give you more time: eight sessions of 1 hour 45 minutes (14 hours) rather than 12 hours. If you’d prefer to move faster, our Saturday Fast Track courses cover more than one level in eight weeks.
The content below is a rough guide. Your teacher will choose the most useful material and adapt the pace to suit the group, so there’s always time to consolidate before moving on.
By the end of this course, you’ll be able to
- Order food and drinks at a bar or restaurant
- Say what food and drink you like and prefer
- Book a table at a restaurant by phone
- Describe a house or flat using basic vocabulary and structures
- Talk about more everyday activities using -ere and -ire verbs
Language you’ll learn along the way
| Grammar | Plural nouns and adjectives; plural definite articles; regular -ere and -ire verbs in the present; volere, potere, andare and venire in the present; anche and invece |
| Vocabulary and themes | Food, drinks and meals; money; bars and restaurants; describing a house |
| Culture and context | Italian bar and restaurant culture, and mealtimes in Italy |
What your Italian will sound like
Vorrei un cappuccino e un cornetto, per favore.
I’d like a cappuccino and a croissant, please.
Io prendo gli spaghetti, invece Luca prende la pizza.
I’ll have the spaghetti, whereas Luca is having the pizza.
Buonasera, posso prenotare un tavolo per quattro persone?
Good evening, can I book a table for four?
La casa ha due camere da letto e una cucina grande.
The house has two bedrooms and a big kitchen.
Self-study
We recommend around an hour of self-study a week. The coursebook’s online audio and video are a great way to practise listening between lessons, and your teacher will suggest exercises to consolidate what you’ve learnt.
What’s next?
After this course you can continue to Italian Level 3, in the Gentle format or any of our other Italian courses.
Can I join if I did Level 1 in a different format?
Yes. All our Italian Level 1 courses cover the same content, so you can move into Gentle Level 2 from an evening, Friday, Sunday or online course. If you’ve learnt Italian elsewhere, our free online placement test will give you a good indication of your level.
Do I need to buy a coursebook?
Yes. The course uses Dieci A1 (ALMA Edizioni, ISBN 9788861826212), which comes with online audio and video. You’ll use the same book throughout our A1 levels. You can buy it via our website, and we’ll share the link in your welcome email.
How is Gentle Italian different from your regular Level 2?
The content and outcomes are the same. Gentle courses run for 14 hours over eight 1 hour 45 minute afternoon sessions, rather than 12 hours, so there’s more time for practice and review.
Will we cover every page of the coursebook?
No. Your teacher will focus on the most useful content and may add other materials, adapting the pace to suit the group.
Why does the teacher speak Italian in class?
Hearing Italian throughout the lesson is one of the most effective ways to build your listening and comprehension. Your teacher will always make sure you understand, using gesture, visuals and carefully chosen language.
Will I be speaking in class?
Yes. Speaking is at the heart of every session, in a supportive and encouraging group where making mistakes is part of learning.
What happens after this course?
After this course you can continue to Italian Level 3, in the Gentle format or any of our other Italian courses.
