Please note: each course needs a minimum of 4 students to run.
Important: Completing this course helps you prepare effectively, but it does not guarantee a pass in the exam. Exam results depend on your starting level, progress, and performance on the exam day.

Required Coursebook
Percorso CILS Cittadinanza B1 – Test di preparazione + online audio
Publisher: Ornimi
ISBN: 9786188492776
Assessment
- Completion of homework assignments
- Performance in mock exams
The B1 Citizenship exam is aimed at adults, living in Italy or abroad, interested in obtaining Italian citizenship (Law 1 December 2018, no. 132).
This exam certifies competence with reference to the autonomous learner profile of the CEFR and therefore tests the linguistic communicative skills needed to use the Italian language appropriately in contexts and communicative situations relating to life in Italy, in the personal sphere, in public contexts, at work and in training.
Those who possess this level of competence can understand the essential points of a clearly articulated speech in standard Italian, to read written texts that they encounter most frequently in everyday life and in communicative situations in Italian. Oral and written production is communicatively effective, even if it contains errors.
Having specific objectives, the CILS B1 Cittadinanza exam has a different construct and format from the CILS UNO B1 exam. In particular, the B1 Cittadinanza describes a much more limited portion of competence than the standard B1 and for this reason it has a spendability limited to citizenship purposes only. This exam does not cover working and academic aims.
The CILS UNO-B1 Cittadinanza has to be passed in full: if candidates fail one part of the exam, they have to do the whole exam again.
Is this a general Italian language course?
No. This is an exam preparation course for the CILS B1 Citizenship exam. It focuses on exam tasks, strategies and practice — not on teaching Italian from B1 level.
What level do I need to join?
You need to already be at B1 level before you start. As a guide, this is usually the equivalent of at least 180 hours of one-to-one or group Italian classes.
I’m not sure I’m B1 — what should I do?
Please take our online level test before enrolling. If your level is below B1, we recommend taking one of our Italian courses first and joining this preparation course once you reach B1.
How long is the course and when are the lessons?
The course runs for 6 weeks, with one face-to-face lesson per week at our school: 18:30–20:30.
Do I need to study between classes?
Yes. You’ll need to complete self-study and homework between sessions to make progress and build exam confidence.
How is the course assessed?
Progress is monitored through homework completion and performance in mock exams, with teacher feedback.
Will this course guarantee that I pass the exam?
No. Completing the course can help you prepare effectively, but it does not guarantee a pass. Exam results depend on your starting level, your progress, and performance on the exam day.
Can I take the CILS exam at IH London?
Yes — you can take the exam at IH London (see our Italian CILS Qualification page for dates and booking information). Please note that the deadline to sign up is usually around one month before the exam, and places are limited. It’s a very popular exam, so we recommend booking as soon as possible.
What happens if the course doesn’t reach minimum numbers?
Each course requires a minimum of 4 students to run. If the minimum number isn’t reached, we’ll contact you with the available options.
