During the course, we will share ideas, techniques and lessons that enable students to learn about complex and difficult topics, both local and global. The course shows how materials and tasks can help leaners better understand these issues, more confidently express their opinions and feelings, and better understand how their actions can affect others. The course also explores tasks and materials that encourage learners to understand and respect different views and perspectives, and learn how they can work with others to create a fairer, better world.
The course will look at how teachers can design materials and lessons that focus on real-world themes and cultural content. This may include any of the following topics
· Climate change, sustainability and other environmental issues
· Inclusion and diversity
· Social justice & fairness
· Globalisation & interconnectedness
· Human rights (including children, women, people with disabilities, LGBTQ+ people)
· Peace & Conflict
· Misinformation and disinformation
· Poverty (wealth poverty, food or water poverty)
· Access to education
· Racism and discrimination
· Migration and interconnectedness
In terms of classroom content, the course explores how teachers can use texts and communicative tasks to develop global citizenship skills. We will also share how teachers can provide language issues to help learners express themselves, discuss complex topics, tackle disagreements, and mediate between different people and viewpoints. It also includes a thread which looks at how other modes of expression, such a poetry, drama, photography, or art, can be used to help students tackle complex and difficult issues.
At the end of the course, teachers are encouraged to design and share a set of materials drawing on their learning on their course that they would like to use back in their teaching contexts.
This course is for language and subject teachers who want to help their students to become global citizens by helping them understand the interconnected world we live in and developing the skills they need to live and thrive within it.
