Bring British culture to the classroom

Who is this course for?

This course is for teachers who are interested in finding out about modern British culture. The topics will be taught using a communicative methodology as we might do with language students. It offers an insight into contemporary issues in British life and culture and increases confidence in sourcing and adapting authentic materials to use in class.

Course objectives

  • To increase confidence in sourcing and adapting up-to-date authentic materials for use in class
  • To gain greater awareness of contemporary issues and culture in Britain
  • To share teaching experiences with other professionals

Course outline

This course explores the language, issues and contemporary culture of modern Britain. It also includes guided visits and excursions in and around London. The methodologies utilised will form discussion topics during the course. The teacher will demonstrate teaching techniques as they lead the classes.

The course will improve your use of ‘everyday’ English in the classroom, and your understanding of contemporary British culture. It will help you integrate culture into your teaching of English as a foreign language.

Life in Britain focuses on British culture: its music, media, fashion, art, law, politics, film, education and modern literature.

At the beginning of the course your tutor will ask for input on what topics are of particular interest to you and content will be negotiated by the class. In this way we hope the course will be as relevant and interesting to you as possible.

Areas of study could include:

  • the education system
  • the legal system
  • the family
  • multicultural Britain
  • the Royal Family
  • politics and the political system
  • press and media
  • employment
  • sport
  • housing
  • the arts
  • youth culture

Cultural excursions

A full cultural programme is organised for this course with daily morning (or afternoon depending on your course date) and evening excursions to places of cultural interest around London. Programmes can include:

  • a London cycle tour
  • an art exhibition
  • a West End show
  • a live music event
  • an alternative London guided tour
  • a leisure activity
  • a pub quiz
