Learn to teach English as a foreign language and travel the world
All CELTA courses now online. All start dates still running.
We are the home of CELTA. Worldwide, the CELTA is the industry standard for teachers.
We have always valued the very best teaching. Our founders, John and Brita Haycraft, wrote the first qualification for teaching English as a foreign language, which became the CELTA. Today it is assessed by Cambridge English, part of the University of Cambridge.
Whether you want to teach for a summer, a year, or a lifetime, the skills learned during a CELTA course with IH London will boost your CV and career – and open up a world of possibilities to teach and travel.
What will you gain with a CELTA?
- The CELTA (Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) is the most widely recognised TEFL (Teaching English as Foreign Language) qualification in the world.
- The CELTA qualification is recognised by the British Council and will enable you to teach in English language schools across the globe.
- The CELTA is accredited by Cambridge English Language Assessment, part of the University of Cambridge, which makes it prestigious and schools looking to employ you know you have been trained to a high standard.
- The CELTA is the teaching qualification asked for by 9 out of 10 English language teacher employers in the UK and 7 out of 10 worldwide (source: Cambridge English).
- The CELTA is an intensive course, with our graduates qualified and confident to teach anywhere in the world.
- The CELTA doesn’t expire so you will be a qualified English language teacher for life.

Career advice for new teachers
We offer career guidance to our CELTA graduates and we are part of IH World, a network of over 150 independent schools in over 50 countries. During your course, you will receive a careers talk, with interview tips and where to find teacher jobs.
We also invite you to join our ‘Trained by IH London’ online group. You can stay connected to people you met on the course, connect and learn from fellow teachers at different stages of their career, receive learning resources from IH London, hear about the latest vacancies, and share travel and teaching stories.
We offer employment to strong candidates from our CELTA courses in our young learner centres and our adult London school.
